Smart Sensors Reveal Jumping Hotspots and Safety Risks at the "Spiegelwaal”
On hot summer days, dozens of young people, sometimes hundreds of times a day, jump from the various bridges in the Spiegelwaal. Jumping from these bridges is officially prohibited and can lead to dangerous situations between various water users.Last swimming season, the host partner Municipality of Nijmegen ran an experiment to gain insight into how often people jump and when and where risky situations arise. Using smart, privacy-safe sensors, they counted the number of jumps and mapped the moments when jumpers and other water users crossed paths.
They also asked rowers and other water users about their experiences. This yielded surprising results and valuable insights! They will now explore how to improve safety on the Spiegelwaal, so that everyone can continue to enjoy this beautiful area safely, even on hot days!
