The MegaBITS Steering Group convened online on 16 and 17 June 2025, bringing together partners to advance work on smart cycling solutions and mobility innovation.

Key discussions focused on the progress of Work Packages (WPs), coordination of deliverables, and preparations for upcoming project milestones. Partners shared updates on regional implementations, highlighting innovative developments such as Overijssel’s launch of the national cycling app “Da’s zo gefietst!” and Antwerp’s use of the Mobility Potential Tool to inform strategic infrastructure decisions. Le Havre presented insights into their transition to new data providers, while Hamburg shared methodologies to refine traffic data through correction factors. Copenhagen reported on the effectiveness of Variable Message Signs in influencing cyclist behaviour.
Considerable focus was placed on the development and future integration of Floating Bike Data (FBD). Various regions shared their experiences and technical challenges with different platforms and data providers, underlining both the significant potential and the experimental nature of current applications. Imec will develop a “cookbook” compiling guidelines and lessons learned from FBD use cases to support broader knowledge-sharing. Communication activities are advancing, with articles planned on MegaBITS’ contributions showcased at events such as Velo-City. Furthermore, the Smart Cycling Roadmap continues to be disseminated across key European platforms, with future presentations scheduled at the Smart Cycling Summit and national congresses.
Looking forward, discussions explored the possibility of extending the project through upcoming funding opportunities, as well as creating a masterclass on Cycling Data & ITS to further disseminate insights and foster capacity-building among municipalities. The Steering Group will reconvene in Hamburg later this year to continue progressing towards the project’s goals. The MegaBITS end conference and the associated NECTAR academic conference are scheduled for March 2026 in Enschede.
