Collaboration and knowledge-sharing to drive circularity in the built environment
On 22 May 2025, the CircleBIM project team took part in the 2nd KARMA Staff Exchange at HafenCity University Hamburg, contributing to a collaborative day focused on advancing circular construction strategies across the North Sea Region.
The event opened with a presentation from the Ministry for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture, providing insights into Hamburg’s evolving circular economy strategy for the construction sector. Key discussions revolved around early indicators for measuring progress and embedding circularity into urban policy frameworks.
After a networking lunch, CircleBIM presented their project’s vision, methodology, and the ongoing Hamburg pilot project. The team introduced their framework for integrating circular construction principles into public projects through Building Information Management (BIM) processes and Local Circular Construction Partnerships (LCCPs). The presentation emphasised how these partnerships help align stakeholders along the public planning and construction value chain, promoting material reuse, waste reduction, and resource efficiency.
The session sparked valuable discussions with participants from across the region, many expressing interest in adapting the CircleBIM approach in their own local contexts.
The exchange not only reinforced connections between CircleBIM and KARMA but also reaffirmed a shared commitment to collaborative innovation and sustainable transformation in the construction sector.
