Exploring practical applications of BIM for circular public construction.
On 22 January 2026, the CircleBIM team hosted part of the KARMA project's interregional meeting. The morning began with a guided tour of the historic Karstadt building, led by Sprinkenhof AG, highlighting its ongoing transition and reuse potential. Participants then attended a short workshop at HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU), where the HCU team presented the CircleBIM framework and shared insights from the Hamburg pilot. Discussions focused on BIM-driven strategies for digital material tracking, reuse planning, and data-supported decision-making in public building projects.
The Karstadt pilot demonstrates how digital tools can transform existing public buildings into models of circular construction. HCU is using the building as a living laboratory: 3D scans, material inventories, and digital material passports guide the identification, reuse, and recycling of components. Students will contribute through research and project work, applying BIM methodologies to assess and model reusable elements, fostering hands-on learning and knowledge transfer.
Participants expressed high appreciation for the site visit and presentations, highlighting the inspiration and practical value of the pilot. CircleBIM thanks the KARMA project and all attendees for their engagement and contributions, which enriched discussions on circular construction and the practical use of BIM in public sector projects.
