Circular strategy in practice

This project focuses on the circular strategy biobased, implemented through the use of natural, renewable materials and holistic circular design.

Heuvelstraat Silvolde delivers 28 net-zero rental homes realized in two phases. Circular demolition practices were applied to the old houses, allowing materials such as roof tiles, bricks, window frames, and façade panels to be reused in the new development. Biobased insulation and cladding, including straw, hemp, and recycled panels, provide excellent thermal performance and a healthy indoor climate. The project combines these material strategies with a focus on social sustainability, engaging residents in climate-adaptive measures such as rainwater management and green communal spaces.

Added circular value

In addition to the main strategy, the project also applies:

  • Refurbish and remanufacture
  • Recycle

This combination shows how biobased construction can be integrated with refurbishment and recycling to create sustainable, high-quality housing.

Why this project matters

Heuvelstraat Silvolde demonstrates that biobased and circular construction can coexist with social sustainability and high living quality. It serves as a practical example for the building sector, showing how natural materials and circular practices can create future-proof, low-impact housing.

This project is one of the analysed cases in the “Good Practices for Circular Planning and Construction” document.
