(NO) Scalable BIM for Smarter Building Management

Møre og Romsdal County Council (NO)

Creation of a digital BIM database for efficient and sustainable management of public buildings

Main content

Møre og Romsdal County Council is a regional authority in Norway responsible for maintaining, operating, and upgrading upper secondary schools in the region, as well as building new facilities when additional capacity is needed.

The digitalisation of the building portfolio has been on the agenda since 2020, but participation in CircleBIM has accelerated the progress and highlighted its importance among everyone. The pilot focuses on digitising and organising information for five upper secondary schools – Hustadvika vgs, Molde vgs, Stranda vgs, Fagerlia vgs, and Herøy vgs – with a combined building area of approximately 49,000 m². These schools vary in size, age, and existing data quality, making them an ideal starting point for developing scalable solutions.

BIM is central to this initiative. By consolidating architectural, technical, and operational data into one intelligent model, scattered files and paper archives are replaced with a structured, up-to-date digital system. This enables better facility management, maintenance, and long-term planning, while supporting circular practices such as material reuse in future projects.

The pilot aims to contribute as a regional and public-sector actor, encouraging other organisations and companies with large property portfolios to adopt similar approaches. By raising these portfolios to a certain digital standard, property owners can manage, plan, build, and operate in ways that are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable.
