ALCABIO, Developing Algae biocascading supply chains for bioeconomy applications

Project description

Seaweeds are promising biomass resources for all kind of applications including food, feed, cosmetics, biodegradable bioplastics and more. However present seaweed consumption and usage is marginal. New seaweed products which are attractive to consumers will boost attention, interest and hopefully also seaweed-based consumption. Seaweeds can be collected wild and cultured in onshore and offshore systems. Algae biocascading processing will create high added value products. Effective communication will create consumer awareness about seaweed products.

Many algae based local initiatives invent and develop their own local supply chain. All these local initiatives are hampered by the lack of scale leading to high raw material prices, limited processing facilities and only a few applications The aim is to increase innovation capacity of all algae-stakeholders organized in the supply chain for improving existing and creation of new opportunities. The project innovates algae onshore and offshore aquaculture systems, develops cost effective processing technologies and new market driven product development for food, feed and nonfood applications.

Confirmed partners

We have project partners in:

- Netherlands

- Germany

Partners we are looking for

We are looking for local existing initiatives/supply chains for algae production and product development consisting of SME’s, research and educational institutes and regional authorities with Blue economy fostering policies.

We will learn from each other and together we make the Algae Blue Economy great!
