The continued success of a hydrogen-driven barge, produced with support from our ZEM Ports North Sea project, is now featured on Euronews TV.
In May 2023, the H2 Barge1 was launched as the world’s first zero-emission barge running purely on green hydrogen. The barge was retrofitted to run on hydrogen by the Dutch company Future Proof Shipping (FPS), a partner in the ZEM Ports project.
Two years on, their second H2 barge - modelled on the first one - is in regular operation along the river Rhine, moving goods between Duisburg and Rotterdam.
The TV episode reveals the key benefits of this novel type of green shipping: Close to zero CO2 emissions and a healthier, noise-free work environment for the crew.

Available across 10 languages, the Euronews story and TV episode are being publicised around the world, making the shipping industry and their customers aware of this new technology.
Euronews also interviewed our National Contact Point in the Netherlands, Daan Geraets. In the clip below, he puts the ZEM Ports project into perspective, explaining why transnational cooperation matters in this context.
The emissions don't stop at the border. It's a problem for the whole North Sea Region. We need a joint strategy, we need joint knowledge, we need joint technology.
We are proud to have supported the ZEM Ports project. The Horizon programme also supported the barge's retrofit, and the FPS put in their own investment as well. The success story of the H2 barges shows what can happen when we build synergies different EU funds and forward-looking companies.
A warm thank you to Future Proof Shipping and our National Contact Point Daan Geraets for cooperating with Euronews to produce this great story!
